The statistics in regards to older men marrying young girls is mind boggling and disgusting. Every day 33,000 girls are married to older men, denied their rights to education and opportunity and robbed of their childhood. Many countries around the world find this practice normal, thankfully we do not find it normal here in the United States. More than 91 countries allow girls as young as six-years-old to be married. This is a problem.

Mockery: Women’s New Weapon 

In 1998 Portuguese born artist Paula Rego created a series of work entitled Untitled. The Abortion Pastels. Rego created her work in response to a referendum to legalise abortion in Portugal, which was very narrowly defeated. Each canvas depicted the image of a woman undergoing an unsafe abortion. When the series was exhibited in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, Rego recalled the whispered secrets of women in the gallery while looking at her artworks.

Peggy Digg’s The Domestic Violence Milk Carton Project consisted of an image printed by Tuscan Dairy Farms on over one million milk cartons, which were distributed during January and February of 1992 throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. This wide-reaching project sought to both raise awareness of domestic violence and distribute a helpline.

Activist Boniface Mwangi on confronting corruption in his homeland, and director Sam Soko on recording his campaign Kenyan director Sam Soko’s debut documentary feature, Softie, opens with the film’s protagonist, Boniface Mwangi, sourcing 1,000 litres of pigs’ blood. “I’ve found a van for you. When do you want it? When are you getting the blood?” Mwangi asks.

Chinese Artist Zhang Bingjian has embarked on an artistic project to promote transparency in China and Chinese government. His motivation? Discovering the extent of the corruption going on in his country. Zhang told the Toronto Star: “The chief prosecutor announced that 3,000 officials had been convicted for corruption in a single year. I remember being shocked, a little angry and then confused.”

GrowNYC is a nonprofit that promotes community values through environmental missions. One of GrowNYC's programs is the GreenMarkets, which are fresh produce markets that are set up in various neighborhoods in the city, each one unique to the area. These markets focus on bringing local farmers into the community as well as promoting awareness of seasonal produce in order to limit the environmental damage of importing goods.

On a sidewalk in the Village in downtown Manhattan, an African-American woman leans on her elbows and knees, wearing only black underpants. Scrawled in black marker all over her body are the words "Ain't I a Woman?" Across the street, another woman lies face down, sunbathing on a large sheet of tinfoil. The sentence "White Supremacy Is Terrorism" is inked across her white skin, which is turning pink under the hot sun.
