Lynn Neuman, director of New York City–based Artichoke Dance, became preoccupied with single-use disposability after she started wondering about waste and who was responsible for it. For some of her performances, she has collected massive quantities of discarded plastics, like bags and six-pack rings, and invited community members to contribute their own. “There’s a real aha moment when people see how quickly plastic amasses,” she says.

Last month, a graduate student by the name of Josh Treuhaft set up the Salvage Supperclub in New York City—an establishment where diners pay US$50 to eat a six course meal made from food scraps salvaged from the dumpster. "Around 30 people gathered on Victoria Island Monday morning to advocate for the return of the endangered American Eel to the Ottawa River. The event mixed art with activism, with attendees carrying windsocks decorated to look like as eels as they marched to Parliament Hill. The marquee creation was an 8.2-meter-long replica of an eel, which had to be carried by six walkers."
